Cuttlebone Castings

Cuttlebone Cast Works

Cuttlebone casting is one of the oldest forms of casting.  The bone is from the ancient remains of a medium-sized mollusk, and found on beaches around the world. I appreciate so many things about this form of casting.  One being its ancient roots, and the primitive nature of the casting.

The process involves taking an impression of the bone itself. By creating a mold of it, I can pour molten silver into it and get a true cast. The results are so tactile and the surface texture is always different, like a fingerprint.

I am always excited about the results. Even though I have been doing this 20 years now, the anticipation hasn’t lessened. Cuttlebone casting texture has so much dimension, it captures my imagination every time.

I see many different things in these castings: the surface of the moon, the layered perspective of a landscape, rolling hills and valleys.  My castings are mainly designed in a circular format, the simplicity of which helps to highlight the detailed textures.  I also do commission works upon request.

Each cast is completely one of a kind as the mold is destroyed in the process – burnt to ash.
